Despite their proliferation, SMEs and family firms are often classified as risky businesses, as only one in ten firms reach the third generation of family ownership-management. In addition to the business and financial risks which may arise, there are often non-financial risks that relate to the interwoven family-ownership-management subsystems, governance and succession complications.
